The second season of Shadow and Bone has arrived as Alina, Mal, the Crows, and everyone else battles with the Darklings and the Fold. While Season 2 is already packed with action and bursting at the seams with the plot, that doesn't mean there isn't room for a third season — as long as Netflix gives it the green light, that is.
While Netflix has yet to officially greenlight a new season of Shadow and Bone, there are a few bits of information floating around about Season 3, including some words from showrunner Eric Heisserer himself. Here's everything we know about Shadow and Bone season 3 so far.
Are Shadow and Bone getting a third season?
Netflix hasn't officially announced Shadow and Bone's return, but that isn't particularly surprising. After the show's first season, it was not renewed until June 2021, several months after its mid-April release date. In other words, now is not the time to panic; Netflix may still be up for renewal.
When can Shadow and Bone season 3 be released?
If we look at the first and second seasons, we are probably looking at a two-year gap between seasons. And given that Netflix hasn't announced a new season immediately, it seems likely that the show isn't currently in production and that a third season will take at least as long as Season 2's release.
Will Mal and Alina be in Shadow and Bone Season 3?
It seems that way, and it seems like they won't be together in the same place, at least not when the season starts. Season 2 of Shadow and Bone significantly changed the plot of the book, breaking up Mal and Alina and sending them in different directions - while the book allowed them to stay together as the (powerless) owners of the orphanage that previously brought them together.
In a subsequent interview with Polygon, showrunner Eric Heisserer explained that the decision was made because it was best for the show and for it to continue.
"From a practicality point of view, we don't want to lose Archie and Jessie in a cottage," Heisserer said. "It would be a terrible choice on our part. She's such a wonderful human being, just like Jessie makes me shine on set every time she comes on.
Will The Crows Be In Shadow And Bone Season 3?
It certainly seems like the show will once again be his focus if it returns for a third season. The crows themselves are already fan-favorite characters, and now it looks like at least some of them will be embarking on privateering adventures of piracy alongside Mal.
